The screws are JIS Cross Recessed they are NOT phillips screws. There are no phillips screws on a Japanese motorcycle, none! If you use a phillips screwdriver it will cam out and damage the screw. Trying to force it out can damage the butterfly and the carburettor throat. Once the screws are removed the butterfly can be very carefully removed. If the butterfly screws are tight, usually because they have been staked, then first, seal the carburettor to ensure that no grit can fall into the throat, and use a Dremel or similar tool to grind away the staked section of the screw. Do not use the butterfly as a stop when loosening the nuts on the end of the shaft.
Because they have a long slot to hold the butterfly, they can be easily twisted or bent. Removal of the throttle shafts needs to be done with great care. Most of them will show all of the internal jets and parts, but very little of the external fittings that are between the carbs, such as springs and throttle shafts. Note that most parts books and manuals do not show the details of the parts and assembly of the carburettors when they are separated. When disassembling your carbs, take as many photos as necessary. However, it could be useful for other models that use these carburettors. The most important factor is whatever setting you choose to use, make sure all four carbs and all eight floats are EXACTLY the same.This guide is for a set of Mikuni BDST carburettors from a Yamaha FZR400RR 3TJ1. a RUNNING outside measured down from bottom of carb body setting for 81 and XJ's. Book has measured settings for 78-79 carbs.80carbs.
22mm, it will be flooding so bad, likely plugs will foul in about a minute or less no matter what rpm.so gotta try and find the sweet spot that works for your particular motor. Example to get you started.33mm, idle circuit will be so lean, you'll be lucky if it idles. wear, altitude,air filter options,etc.lot of variables, so what is "perfect" for one bike may or may not be the "perfect" setting for another ones bike.
Gonna vary a bit depending on vacuum draw correlated with ring,cyl. For a static float level setting, do NOT have carb bank upside down! Rock the carbbank on its side so there is NO float weight on the spring! Initial and second option there and a 24-25mm will get ya close for a start, and may run just fine after sync, etc. Clear tube is the best.with bike idleing.
